Why Are We Blogging?

"They might have guns, but we have flowers."

As ordinary citizens, we often feel helpless as we behold the savage atrocities happening around us. We know that ISIS exists and we know that they are killing thousands around the globe. However, we also know that we are unable to physically fight them off. But what if there IS something we can do to counteract their efforts? Through blogging about the issue of ISIS recruitment, we wish that one more person become informed and understand the omnipresent threat against ordinary citizens. We wish that through this blog one less person will give his heart to ISIS.

For our Humanity in Globalization (POLI 3078) project, a research paper or report would’ve certainly been the easy way out. However, we wanted to take a proactive direction towards this project and disseminate this information on the web. A research paper submitted to the professor carries one purpose - the completion of a graded assignment. However, in exhibiting our research and the obtained knowledge through a blog, we wanted to carry the purpose of raising awareness and counteracting ISIS through a social media, soft power approach. As ISIS is known to a prominent social media influencer - at the individual level - all efforts should be directed towards overpowering ISIS influence on the web. Through Flowers against Guns, we are taking the first step in such a strategy as students of HKU.

  1. Awareness is key to the ISIS issues, and it's great to see that the content on this blog captures the core issues regarding the dangerous group.
